Fasting

The Bible has numerous references to prayer and fasting as a means of growing closer to God.  Three verses are particularly relevant to 40 Days for Life:

Moses prayed and fasted for 40 days before the Lord gave him the 10 Commandments.
Exodus 34:28

Jesus prayed and fasted for 40 days prior to beginning his public ministry,
Matthew 4:1-11

When the apostles could not cast out the demonic spirit possessing an epileptic, Jesus tells them “This kind of demon does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”
Matthew 17:14-15

There are many ways to fast. It is not about what you give up but how it reminds you to stay focused on the Lord and your petition. Here are some fasting ideas for the 40 days:

  • Reduce your meals on one or two days a week
  • Abstain from meats, sweets or alcohol
  • Avoid unnecessary use of computer, cell phone or texting
  • Refrain from television or just sporting events, soap operas or sitcoms
  • Give up video games or movies
